Olive Oil Tour 2K11

We tend to like to organize our trips around themes (BBQ Tour 2K11, for one) and this upcoming trip is no exception. We will be leaving soon on our honeymoon around the Mediterranean, which we have dubbed Olive Oil Tour 2k11. Our itinerary is Istanbul –> Santorini –> Crete –> Athens –> Siracusa –> Palermo –> Rome. We are definitely looking forward to some awesome food.

Freeze Frame

We haven’t been able to post photos with our restaurant posts due to some technical issues, but we promise we have them. We will update all of our older posts soon, along with a much-anticipated review of NEXT.

El Bulli is up next at NEXT

We went to NEXT for the Tour of Thailand menu. It was the most we’ve ever spent on a meal…. and it was worth it. Review to come soon. In the mean time check out what Grant Achatz is up to next, an El Bulli menu!

Nice day for a white wedding

Poor ETW, we’ve been neglecting it. Between jobs, trying to work on our dissertations and planning our wedding (which is now less than 2 months away), ETW has fallen by the wayside. There have been many such “back in a little while” posts, but hopefully we can try to post with semi-regularity. But it’s true, planning the wedding has really been what has put  ETW on the back burner.

So with weddings in mind, here is a picture of William and Kate’s wedding cake which was actually a fruitcake. If we’re going to be honest… we actually prefer Prince William’s grooms cake, which was made of cookies and chocolate. You can even try your hand at making it with this recipe.

On the Way to Texas

I will be at SXSW this week, which means lots of Texan BBQ – hopefully my awesome BBQ updates will make up for the lack fo posts otherwise. Iron Works BBQ is definitely on my list.

Happy New Year!

It’s Lunar New Year – and we are welcoming in the year of the rabbit. To celebrate the occasion several Chicago restaurants are rolling out special New Year’s menus. If you are feeling emboldened by the blizzard you can even head down to Chinatown for a parade on Sunday.

Nearing the end of 2010

Hope everyone had a nice holiday full of lots of delicious food. We got a pizelle press for Christmas, so we plan on going on an Italian cookie bonanza in the next few weeks.  Also – Thanks to Gapers Block for the shoutout. We will be posting a recap of our 2010 Eatign adventures in the next few days – it was quite a year!

Happy Holidays from the Past

Thought everyone might get a kick out of this crazy 19th-century British postcard entitled “A dead heat for the plate,” found through the Liverpool National Museums Blog. Happy Eating!

Food as Art: The Work of Robert Festino

The visual aspects of food are some of the most appealing to me – who could deny the awesome colors and textures. One art director that has caught my eye is Robert Festino, who does work for Bon Appetit. I found more information about his work through DesignWorkLife. Who could resist these colors?

Guess where we found Doner?

Doner – a middle eastern dish of meat carved from a spit (similar to gyros and shewarma) – is completely global. We know Doner has a huge presence around the world from Germany to São Paulo, but we didn’t know quite how far Doner reached. It is definitely a hit in Cambodia. Check out this Doner cart we saw in downtown Siem Reap:

Back in the Saddle Again

We’ve been gone a shameful amount of time – shameful. Really, this has been probably the busiest 2 months ever – with moving, graduation and a 2+ week long trip. We’re back now and have a lot of food adventures to report on from our trip to Southeast Asia. Stay tuned!

Eating our way around NYC

Eating the World is wrapping up a great weekend trip to NYC currently, where we added three countries to our map: Haiti, Venezuela and, wait for it, AUSTRALIA! As you know Australia has been one of our most sought-after counties. We also hit up some Turkish and Greek restaurants, Momofuku Milk Bar and our favorite multi-national falafel chain, Maoz. Stay tuned for the reviews.

It’s March?

Wow, time flies. This blog has been a bit quiet as of late,  but we have a good excuse, we promise. Both eaters are en route to becoming ABD and thus have basically been hunkered down over books and papers…. It’s a hectic time, but once Spring Break comes around, we may have a little more time to update. Especially since one of us is incorporating food culture into our research (good idea!).

El Bulli to Close

El Bulli, the famed Molecular Gastronomic restaurant in Spain, which has often been called the best restaurant in the world – is closing for 2 years,  starting in 2012 and will open in 2014 with a completely different concept. Wow – so much for eventually getting there!
