One of our go-to places for a cool summer treat is Palateria La Monarca in Rogers Park (6955 N. Clark) – we usually get the lime and mango paletas. However, there are a whole variety of Mexican Paleterias (popsicle shops) and Neverias (Ice cream stores) throughout Chicago that we have not yet tried. Even just on the stretch of North Clark near Monarca we noticed a few new ice cream places popping up, including Las Delicias de Michoacan (6649 N. Clark). However, shops aren’t just popping up on North Clark – it is a city-wide phenomenon! WBEZ’ Monica Eng has an article about the proliferation of Mexican ice cream shops, and more than a few recommendations of places/treats to try. In particular, Eng recommends the mangonada, a neveria staple of mango sorbet topped with mango slices and a sweet and salty pickled fruit sauce called chamoy. With the arrival of September I’ve seen my fair share of articles proclaiming the end of Summer – but I’m not ready to let it go yet. In hon,or of the continuation of Summer (I have until the 21st, darnit!) the eaters ventured out to Paletria La Monarca (6955 N Clark St, Chicago, IL) an ice cream / Mexican popsicle store on north Clark street. We had driven by the Paletertia’s iconic green popsicle time so so so so many times while driving down Clark, but, always on the way to another location, we never stopped in. But we do love our paletas, so we knew we would get there eventually. Today was the day! The Paleteria did not disappoint, with a selection of about a dozen ice cream flavors and 25 ice and milk paletas ranging from mango to coconut to chocolate. We opted for a lime paleta, which even contained real chunks of lime despite being neon green. At less than a dollar each – how in the world can you beat that on a hot Summer’s day.
The New York Times is feeling the Paleta love. Our favorite Mexican Popsicles were featured in an article by Mark Bittman recently. There is also a recipe included for Banana Paletas. It couldn’t be simpler! It’s summer – give it a go.
Time: 10 minutes, plus freezing. (Makes 4-6 servings)
- 2 medium bananas, about 3/4 cup
- 1 cup whole milk
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/4 cup sugar.
Purée all ingredients together in a blender until smooth. Pour into 4 to 6 molds and freeze until solid. Unmold by first running a little cold water over outside of molds, then gently pulling the sticks.
Spring is officially here – yesterday I saw a paleta cart rolling down the sidewalk. Paletas are Mexican popsicles, with either a milk or water base, and they are delicious! While paletas are a common site on the street, they are also sold in most Mexican grocery stores. We recently picked up paletas from a local supermercado, La Huerta (580 S. Randall Rd, St. Charles, IL) in anticipation of the arrival of warm weather. Our all-time favorite place for paletas is Paleteria La Monarca (6955 N Clark St., Chicago, IL), especially their lime flavor.
L picked Mango and Chile variety – the bar was full of fresh mango chunks and a healthy dose of powdered chile – you can really feel the kick at the end. M went for the more conventional chocolate and almond milk-based bar. Think a really tasty version of a pudding pop, with shaved almond bits throughout. Other varieties available included strawberry and tamarind, as well as a melon flavor called “Mamey.” We were initially drawn to the brand because of its colorful butterfly packaging, a theme also present at La Monarca. Apparently Michoacan is a common name for paleta companies, and the unconfirmed home of the paleta is located in the Mexican State of the same name.
